When Valora first entered the Titanic, she was only allowed in to check if her brother was there. She had to find out how to stay on the Titanic without being kicked out, so she impersonated a rich woman she was going to see, Mrs. Sloane. Surprisingly, she kept the act together until chapter 31.
Unfortunately, Valora's act didn't stay successful. In chapter 31, Val was attacked by Skeleton, another character in the novel. Skeleton threatened Valora and kept her stuck in his closet because he found out about her impersonation. Thankfully, Valora was able to get free with Jamie's assistance.
Near the end of the book, the Titanic was starting to sink. Valora discusses with Jamie on how they could both possibly survive, and they come up with a fake plan. Both of them knew that they would have a lower chance of getting onto the life boats because they're Chinese, so they acted as if they were white to become priority.
